Biography

Graduate as Doctor of Philosophy in Medical Sciences at the American University of Beirut, did postdoctoral training in Clinical Microbiology at different Medical Centers in USA: Medical College of Ohio, Medical College of Virginia, Baylor Medical Center & M.D. Anderson Hospital & Tumor Institute, Houston, Texas. Certified as Diplomat of the American Board of Medical Microbiology, D (ABMM) in 1986, and bestowed the Fellowship of the American Academy of Microbiology (FAAM) in 2000. The academic and clinical positions held encompass: Assistant and Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine (FOM), Kuwait University, and Head of Clinical Microbiology Division at Mubarak Al Kabeer University Hospital, Kuwait (August 1982 – 31 July1990), subsequently and after the invasion of Kuwait, moved to the American University of Beirut (AUB) as Associate Professor (1992-1995) and Director of Clinical Microbiology at AUB Medical Center (AUBMC, 1992-present), then Professor (1995-present) at the FOM-AUB.

Expertise and passion for developing rapid tests to diagnose infectious diseases mainly brucellosis, tuberculosis and invasive candidiasis, and for antimicrobial susceptibility testing and characterization of antimicrobial resistance in clinical laboratory.

He is an experienced teacher, trainer, coordinator and mentorship in theoretical and practical aspects of Medical and Clinical Microbiology for a wide range of undergraduate and post graduate medical and para medical, MSc, PhD students, Residents and Fellows in Lab Medicine, and Infectious Diseases.

Dr. Araj is active membership in several committees including infection control, antimicrobial utilization, at AUBMC, and the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health, as well as in other humanitarian and health related educational and training committees. Invited speaker and consultant in Clinical Microbiology-Infectious Diseases topics, locally, regionally and internationally. Published over 190 papers and book chapters in diverse topics pertaining to Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology. Member of the American Society of Microbiology, and American Academy of Microbiology.
