Biography

Dr. Anthony O. Emeribe, PhD, FMLSCN, is a Fellow of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria with postgraduate degrees from the University of Ibadan and University of Calabar. He is Professor of Laboratory Haematology & Blood Transfusion Science at the College of Medical Sciences, University of Calabar, Honorary Consultant with the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital and the Registrar/Chief Executive of the Medical Laboratory Council of Nigeria (MLSCN), a Federal Government of Nigeria Agency charged with regulating medical laboratory services, medical laboratory science education, in-vitro diagnostics (test kits, reagents, chemicals and equipment), and accreditation of public and private medical laboratories as well as licensing of medical laboratory practitioners. Under his leadership, the MLSCN has successfully instituted standards, processes and guidelines for continual quality improvement and accreditation of public and private medical laboratories in Nigeria. He established the first Public Health In-Vitro Diagnostics Control Laboratory in Lagos that was commissioned by Mr. President in 2013. These are geared towards improved health services and cutting down of capital flight due to medical tourism.

Furthermore, under his leadership, MLSCN was admitted into the membership of the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC), the first agency in West and Central Africa to be so admitted. He had served, as Head of Haematology at the University of Calabar/UCTH for several years during which there was exponential growth in the variety and turnover of laboratory investigations and transfusion services with enhanced mix and number of staff and optimal client/physician satisfaction resulting in the Department receiving the Best Commercialized Unit Award for several years running at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital.
