Planning an activity for World Health Day 2007

WHO welcomes your participation in World Health Day 2007, which will focus on international health security. This toolkit is intended to support you in developing materials and in planning and conducting events to mark the Day. It will be regularly updated using the feedback of its users via this web site.

The events you host will complement others being planned by government officials, key stakeholders, business decision-makers, civil society and the media.

WHO recognizes that countless efforts have been made by many to attract attention to global health and security issues. These issues cannot be addressed in isolation however. They require the involvement of partners in planning activities around World Health Day with the following aim and objectives in mind.

Aim and objectives

The aim of World Health Day 2007 is to draw worldwide attention to international health security issues, to engage high-level political interest in addressing these issues, and to demonstrate how health considerations are closely linked to national and foreign policy and to security agendas.

The objectives of the Day are to:

  • Influence. Engage high-level political commitment to address key health security challenges globally through international collaboration.
  • Profile. Establish greater awareness and public understanding of the link between health and security.
  • Show leadership and ensure impact. Highlight WHO's crucial role in helping make the world more secure by promoting existing mechanisms such as the International Health Regulations (IHR) and the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN), and protecting international health security for all.
  • Build confidence among stakeholders about WHO's capabilities in developing and implementing strategies to tackle health as a security issue.
  • Encourage partnerships. Build stronger relationships with stakeholders and increase partnership and sponsorship opportunities.
  • Mobilize. Provide a sense of shared mission to mobilize the human and financial resources of WHO and its network of key stakeholders, partners and supporters.

Activities for World Health Day 2007

On World Health Day 2007, WHO anticipates that your organization will be one of hundreds around the world hosting events to establish greater awareness and public understanding of the many pressing international health and security challenges, and to show the impact of the growing interdependency between these two areas on national and international decisions and policies.

WHO is also planning national, regional and global events to mark World Health Day 2007.
