Public Health Symposium on "Shielding our Children from Accidents"

Date: 07-04-2003 from 9am to 6pm

Location: Institute of Health Systems (IHS), HACA Bhavan Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, INDIA

Summary: The IHS, through the public health symposium, will highlight the top three risk factors responsible for accidents in children. Falls are common between the age of 4 to 12 months mainly because of the increased possibility of infants to roll, creep, stand and climb. Falls occur from windows, cradles, adult beds, chairs, tabletops, and the arms of mother & children. Since India has one of the highest road accident rates in the world, and the school children are one of the most vulnerable groups, school transport is an area of concern. Children, as they are too young to comprehend the dangers of fires/burns, easily fall prey to them. The mortality rate due to burns is fairly high. Despite the high prevalance of fire accidents, it is unfortuante that there is lack of awareness about fire safety measures. The symposium will bring together top paeditricians and child safety experts who will be engaged in deliberations to shield our children from accidents.
