2nd Annual World Health Workers Week (April 7 – 11)

World Health Worker Week is an opportunity to mobilize our communities, partners, and policy makers in support of health workers. It is a time to celebrate the amazing work that they do and it is a time to raise awareness of the challenges that they face every day. Access the toolkit and other associated material that can help your organization celebrate health workers.

This flagship report was commissioned by the Global Health Workforce Alliance Secretariat and the World Health Organization to consolidate the latest information available on human resources for health and provide recommendations to the global community on how to attain, sustain and accelerate progress on universal health coverage. The report was launched at the Third Global Forum on Human Resources for Health, informing discussions at this landmark event. Following requests for clarification on the report and a further quality check on the HRH data used for the analysis, an updated version of the report, providing a more explicit and detailed breakdown of the HRH estimates in each of the country profile, has now been developed and can be can be consulted here.

ECSAEast, Central and Southern Africa (ECSA) Health Ministers   Conference adopts resolution to Scale up HRH in the African Region

In direct response to advocacy undertaken by GHWA civil society members, Health Ministers at the Conference adopted a resolution Implementation of The Roadmap for Scaling up the Human Resources for Health in the African Region, committed to by member states at the Global Forum on HRH, in the final communiqué, which outlines the main conclusions and action items of the meeting. The civil society campaign is advocating for UHC as a core component of the post-2015 health agenda, aimed at increasing access to quality health services while reducing financial hardship. Read their call to action and sign on to the campaign.

Last week, 11 countries in South East Asia were officially certified polio-free. Ending polio in these countries, home to 1.8 billion people is a major achievement. Read more

CapacityPlus helps Dominican Republic launch Health Worker Job Descriptions and Orientation Manuals

Alliance member CapacityPlus assisted the government of the Dominican Republic to develop new job description manuals for the posts of doctors, nurses and pharmacists, along with an orientation manual for each of these positions. These documents are the first of their kind for health workers in the country. Read more

The 2014 workplan of the health Workforce Advocacy Initiative is now available. In 2014 HWAI seeks to address two objectives - (1) Advancing the HRH policy agenda through effective advocacy and (2) ensuring effective coordination and support services are provided to the HWAI members.
