Evidence from both developed and developing countries on the provision of first trimester abortion services by well trained midlevel workers suggests that it is safe and beneficial for suitably trained midlevel workers to provide first trimester vacuum aspiration, medical abortions and to treat incomplete abortions.

By training mid-level providers to provide first-trimester aspiration abortions and manage medical abortions, countries will be able to increase the number of health service sites offering first-trimester abortions at primary-care level, thereby improving and increasing women’s access to abortion services without compromising safety or quality of the care.
