South Asia earthquake:
Water, sanitation and hygiene severely compromised
The estimated number of deaths is over 22000 and is rising with time. Severe damage to health facilities and water and sanitation systems has been reported especially in Pakistan and India and to a lesser extend in Afghanistan. Major hospitals in the effected area have collapsed and most of the water and sanitation systems are either not working or are operating with very reduced capacity. Major public health concerns continue to be water-related diseases as a result of massive damage to drinking water and sanitation systems.
More information will be provided on this web site as detailed technical reports emerge from the WHO technical drinking water and sanitation staff already deployed to the affected areas.
