Bulk water shipments

Rolling revision of the WHO Guidelines for Drinking-water Quality

Background

WHO received an unofficial request from the New Zealand government for guidance concerning technologies for the management and monitoring of the safety of large volumes of water carried by ship tanker or other marine vessel.

Expected end-product(s)

1) New section in chapter 6 for Fourth Edition; 2) supporting document or practical guide post–Fourth Edition

Progress to date

WHO followed up with New Zealand and circulated their proposal. Although New Zealand agreed to prepare the text, no progress had been reported by the time of the GDWQ WG meeting (Geneva, 2006). The GDWQ WG meeting (Berlin, 2007) agreed to expand the subject area to bulk water supplies and to prepare a section for chapter 6 for the Fourth Edition. The GDWQ WG meeting (Singapore, 2008) approved a proposed outline for the new section in chapter 6 and agreed that a supporting document or practical guide should be prepared subsequently.
