Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 Policy and Donor Forum 2014 hosted in Melbourne
From 5-7 May 2014, around 100 policy-makers, donors and private sector representatives convened for the Decade of Action's annual Policy and Donor Forum. The objective was to raise awareness about the Decade of Action and mobilize the interest of participants to support it in concrete ways.
The Forum was opened by a representative of the Office of the Prime Minister of Australia who stressed Australia's commitment to the issue and - in view of its excellent track record - its obligation to support other countries, particularly in the region. The actress Michelle Yeoh and former NATO Secretary Lord George Robertson made passionate pleas for the inclusion of road safety in the post-2015 development agenda and for active participation in the UN's "My World" global survey.
Etienne Krug, Director VIP, presented an overview of progress in the Decade of Action as well as proposals for next steps. The Forum was part of a global "Week of Action" to encourage participation in the My World survey in which 2 million people have cast their votes to date.
