Turkey's Prime Minister launches national plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 and the Road Safety Platform

Around 800 people attended the launch of the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 and the opening ceremony of the Road Safety Platform in Turkey.

Dr Etienne Krug, VIP Director, WHO made a presentation on the Decade in which he praised the progress being made in Turkey and acknowledged the support of Prime Minister Recep Erdogan in tackling this public health threat. His remarks were followed by Ms Rochelle Sobel of the Association for Safe International Road Travel on "A Mother's Voice", in which she advocated for greater political commitment and improved legislative and enforcement.

The Minister of Health, Mr Mehmet Muezzinoglu, presented the death and disability toll suffered by Turkish citizens and the response of the emergency medical services. The Minister of Interior, Mr Meuammer Guler, presented the efforts including on enforcement which are being undertaken.

In launching the national plan for the Decade and the Road Safety Platform, Prime Minster Recep Erdogan praised WHO and RS10 Project Consortium Partners for their commitment to this important area and described how the road traffic epidemic was being tamed, despite the million new vehicles on Turkish roads each year. The newly established Road Safety Platform will be given the task of implementing the national Decade plan to halve road traffic deaths.
