Dr Syed Jaffar Hussain was educated in the University of Peshawar, Pakistan and the University of Leeds UK. Dr Hussain holds a Master and Doctorate in Public Health. He worked in the government of Pakistan, starting at a community level and working through district and provincial levels to reach the national where he worked for many years in health sector reform, healthy systems development and programme planning and implementation. Since 1997 Dr Hussain worked for various United Nations organizations including UNHCR, UNICEF and the WHO country office in Pakistan. He also worked briefly for Medicine Sans Frontiers on Malaria and Leishmaniasis control in Pakistan. He joined the WHO Regional office for the Eastern Mediterranean region, in Cairo, in February 2003.

Dr Hussain has been the Regional Advisor for Health Promotion/Injury and Violence Prevention and Disability for the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region since January 2004. He has been serving as Regional Ombudsperson since 2009. He has vast experience in health promotion policy development, multisectoral injury prevention policies and Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. He has been leading emergency operations in multiple countries of the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region. Dr Hussain is the author of several published research in the peer reviewed journals, and holds membership in different associations and committees.
