L’institut de recherche pour le développement (IRD) or Research Institute for Development is a French scientific and technical public institution which provides information, expertise, support and training in production performance. It performs research centered on the relationship between human beings and its environment in intertropical areas. In that context the IRD implements research projects on sleeping sickness and the vectors transmitting the disease.

The IRD research Unit 177 (Unité de Recherhce 177 IRD) named "Interactions Hôte/Vecteur/Parasite dans les Trypanosomoses" based in the Centre International de Recherche et Développement sur l'Elevage en zones Subhumides (CIRDES) in Bobo Dioulasso (Burkina Faso) is a WHO Collaborating Center for research on interactions on the epidemiology of human African trypanosomiasis.
