The WHO FCTC interim secretariat
The following pages are intended to keep Parties informed of the ongoing work undertaken by the interim secretariat to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC). The activities described here are mandated by the decisions taken by the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the WHO FCTC at its first session in February 2006.
Nine of the 18 decisions taken by the COP at its first session call for work by the Convention Secretariat that must be completed by the end of 2006 or before the next COP session, set to be held in the first half of 2007. In accordance with paragraph 14 of COP decision FCTC/COP1(10), Establishment of a permanent secretariat of the Convention ("...until the Convention Secretariat is operational, the interim secretariat will continue to assist in its current capacity as provided in Article 24.2 of the Convention."), WHO's Tobacco Free Initiative (TFI) continues to act as the interim secretariat.
