The WHO Prevention of Noncommunicable Diseases Department welcomes Dr Vera da Costa e Silva as Head of the Secretariat of the WHO FCTC
Geneva , 27 June 2014 - The WHO Prevention of Noncommunicable Diseases Department (PND) warmly welcomes Dr Vera Luiza da Costa e Silva as Head of the Secretariat of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (CSF). Dr da Costa e Silva is not only a well-known, but also well-respected figure within WHO because she was the Director of the Tobacco Free Initiative (TFI) from 2001 to 2005, overseeing the WHO secretariat work on the negotiation of the treaty.
After leaving TFI, she kept her strong ties to TFI through her work in WHO Regional Office for Americas, her membership in the Director-General’s Study Group on Tobacco Product Regulation (TobReg), and her participation in WHO international missions on country capacity assessments in tobacco control among other contributions. Based on this solid foundation of a strongly forged alliance, PND looks forward to working closely with Dr da Costa e Silva in the months and years ahead in the fight against the global tobacco epidemic by implementing the treaty.
