10th Ascent of the Snezka Mountain
Czech Republic
31 May 2006
National Institute of Public Health Event description: On the occasion of the WNTD, the NIPH organizes since 1997 the ascent of Snezka, the highest Czech mountain, as a symbol of pure air for all. This action is a good opportunity for different collaborating institutions, including non-profit organizations, to form coalitions. Furthermore, this action markedly arouses increasing interest of mass-media and thus helps to diffuse the health message among the public and to increase the general awareness of harmful effects of smoking.

Czech Medical Association + WHOLO CR
Event description: At the occasion of the World No Tobacco Day there was a press conference in Prague, Czech Republic on May, 30th, organized by the Czech Medical Association (CzMA) and the WHOLO in Prague.
Prof. Jaroslav Blahos, head of the CzMA, welcomed participants and listed the support of the CzMA to tobacco control, including the recent request of the World Medical Association asking health professionals to set a nonsmoking example.
Mrs. Alena Steflova,MD, WHO liaison officer in the Czech Republic, introduced the WNTD 2006, its headline and health impact of different tobacco products. Also, she mentioned the history of World No Tobacco Day and the attention that WHO pays to this event.
Canada was introduced as an example of leading country in tobacco control. The Ambassador of Canada in the Czech Republic, Mr. Bruce Jutzi, mentioned differences between smoke-free environment in Canada and smoky restaurants in Prague. He was supported by his wife, Mrs. Pearl Jutzi, who worked for Smoke Free Ottawa and who described the long process of Canada going smoke free, and other aspects of tobacco control.
The evaluation of tobacco control according a the new scale, published in current issue of the Journal of Tobacco Control (impact factor 3.2), was introduced by Eva Kralikova,MD, who works for the Working Group for the Prevention and Treatment of Tobacco Control at the CzMA. All six categories included into this scale (tobacco product taxes and prices, smoke-free environment, public information level, ad ban, health warnings, and treatment) would be close to maximum in the case of Canada, compared to the Czech Republic, which reached just 38 points from 100 according to the status in 2005.
