The past and future of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC)
On 3 November, the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) reached more than 100 Contracting Parties.
This is a great achievement, especially because the WHO FCTC garnered 100 Parties in a record period of time, less than two and a half years since its adoption by the WHA in May 2003. Today the WHO FCTC has 107 Parties.
To celebrate this important milestone, TFI organized a lunch-time seminar on the past and future of the WHO FCTC on 10 November 2005 at WHO Headquarters, Geneva.
Dr Catherine Le Galès-Camus, Assistant Director-General for Noncommunicable Diseases and Mental Health, chaired this seminar. Presenters included WHO's new Director of the Tobacco Free Initiative, Dr Yumiko Mochizuki, who shared our visions and next steps, Dr Douglas Bettcher, Coordinator FTC, who presented on the history and status of the WHO FCTC and Mr Pedro Saldanha from the Permanent Mission of Brazil, who presented a case study from Brazil.
