One more month to submit comments on The Guidance Framework for testing genetically modified mosquitoes

TDR news item
26 November 2012

The response to last month’s publication of an online survey for comments on The Guidance Framework for testing genetically modified mosquitoes has been strong. Many valuable comments have already been received, but with the holidays coming up, we want to remind people of the 7 January, 2013 deadline for comment submission into the online system here.

ALL opinions will be considered by the production team prior to finalizing the document. It is only the online survey where official comments should be registered. Individual correspondence (printed or email) cannot be entered into the system for collection, so please make sure you go to the online survey.

The drafting of the document was commissioned by the World Health Organization through the Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR), and the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH). Its goal is to describe considerations for how to test genetically modified mosquitoes for efficacy and safety and address ethical, social and regulatory issues during the developmental phases of the genetic control methods. This process has involved four working groups (efficacy; safety; ethical, legal and social; and regulation) for the drafting of the document, each of which received comments about their draft from several experts, and the advanced consolidated draft was reviewed by many additional experts worldwide. The organizations and reviewers make no recommendations for or against this technology or take a position. The public survey is the last phase of consultation into this document.
