Landmark conference ends with adoption of Rio Political Declaration
WHO convened a global conference on 19-21 October 2011 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to build support for the implementation of action on social determinants of health. The conference brought together over 1000 participants representing 125 Member States and a diverse group of stakeholders. The event was attended among others by Michel Temer, Vice President of Brazil and Dr Margaret Chan, WHO Director-General. On 21 October, 2011 participating Member States adopted the Rio Political Declaration on Social Determinants of Health.

World Conference to be discussed at next Executive Board meeting

Member States adopt political declaration
125 participating Member States adopted the Rio Political Declaration on Social Determinants of Health, pledging to work towards reducing health inequities by taking action across five core areas.

28 case studies published
We have put online 28 case studies presenting successful examples of policy action aiming to reduce health inequities. The case studies cover a wide range of issues, including conditional cash transfers, gender-based violence, tuberculosis programmes and maternal and child health.
