    27 July 2012- The WHO Conference Secretariat has now put together the full Report of the World Conference (66 pages with color pictures). A 16 page summary Report is also available.
  • World Health Assembly adopts the Rio Political Declaration on Social Determinants of Health
    26 May 2012- A resolution endorsing the Rio Political Declaration on Social Determinants of Health was adopted in May 2012 by WHO Member States at the Sixty-fifth World Health Assembly (WHA) in Geneva, Switzerland.
  • Outcome of the World Conference on Social Determinants of Health
    21 January, 2012 - The Executive Board having considered the report on the World Conference on Social Determinants of Health (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, October 2011), recommends to the Sixty-fifth World Health Assembly the adoption of the following resolution.   • Conference summary now available
    28 November 2011 - The WHO Conference Secretariat has put together a brief summary of the conference. A comprehensive report is also being prepared and will be available in spring 2012. Please download and circulate this summary to partners and interlocutors within and outside of the health sector.
  • World Conference to be discussed at next Executive Board meeting
    9 November 2011 - In January 2012, the WHO Executive Board will review the outcome of the World Conference on Social Determinants of Health, including progress on the implementation of WHA resolution 62.14.
  • Member States adopt political declaration
    21 October 2011 - 125 participating Member States adopted the Rio Political Declaration on Social Determinants of Health, pledging to work towards reducing health inequities by taking action across five core areas.
  • WHO launches web-based platform on social determinants of health
    20 October 2011 - During the World Conference on Social Determinants of Health, WHO launched an innovative web-based platform - Action SDH - to facilitate discussion on how health equity could be improved through action on social determinants of health.

  • WHO Bulletin focus on social determinants
    2 October 2011 - The October issue of the WHO Bulletin focuses on social determinants of health, with two editorials and a perspective, plus an interview and news articles from Australia, Brazil, India, Chile and the United Kingdom.
  • Discussion Paper has been released
    23 September 2011 - The WHO Discussion Paper 'Closing the gap: Policy into practice on social determinants of health' has now been released. The paper is available in English, French, Spanish and Portuguese.
  • Online registration extended until 30 September 2011
    22 September 2011 - Online registration has been extended until Friday, 30 September 2011 and late registration will also be possible at the venue from 18 October 2011.   • WHO book on social determinants of health wins British Medical Book Award 2011
    21 September 2011 - The British Medical Association has awarded the top prize in the public health category to WHO's "Equity, social determinants and public health programmes" (2010) during the 2011 British Medical Book Awards.
  • Fact file on health inequities

  • Conference update
    31 August 2011 - Conference preparations are well underway and there is significant interest within Member States and among stakeholders to actively contribute to the discussions in Rio. Member States will begin a consultation on the draft Rio Declaration on Social determinants of Health on 7 September, 2011 in Geneva.
  • European review of social determinants of health - latest news
    25 August 2011 - The second interim report on the 'European review of social determinants of health and the health divide' has now been released. The report will be discussed during the upcoming Meeting of the WHO Regional Committee for Europe in Baku, Azerbaijan on 12-15 September, 2011.
  • Interview with Polish Minister of Health
    11 August, 2011 - Poland took over the presidency of the Council of the European Union on 1 July, 2011 and pledged to move forward on reducing health inequalities within the EU.
  • WHO Bulletin: article on health inequities in Bangladesh
    5 August, 2011 - Bangladesh is one of the most densely populated and disaster-prone countries in the world. Although absolute poverty has declined in the country in recent years, the gap between the rich and poor has further widened.
  • Announcement: Call for proposals for stakeholder events
    1 August, 2011 - The Conference Secretariat is currently accepting proposals to hold stakeholder events in Rio de Janeiro during the World Conference on Social Determinants of Health.
  • Health inequities data in World Health Statistics 2011
    8 July, 2011 – The World Health Statistics report is an essential resource for policy-makers and researchers working on the identification and reduction of health inequities. A dedicated section in the 2011 report presents data from 93 countries using three health indicators.
  • New book: Social determinants approaches to public health
    24 June, 2011 – A new WHO publication entitled "Social determinants approaches to public health: from concept to practice" takes the discussion on avoidable and unfair inequities in health to a practical level.
  • Guide for Participants now available
    16 June, 2011 – A Guide for Participants is now available online, containing all necessary practical information for delegations and other participants.
  • Government of Brazil holds side event during World Health Assembly
    16 May, 2011 – The Government of Brazil – in collaboration with the WHO Conference Secretariat – held a side event during the 64th World Health Assembly, updating Member States and stakeholders about preparations for the conference.
  • WHO launches technical consultation
    10 May, 2011 – WHO seeks your comments and feedback on the current draft of the conference Technical Paper, which will inform discussions at the World Conference on Social Determinants of Health.
  • The Lancet publishes special section on health and inequities in Brazil
    9 May, 2011 – The Lancet has published a series of analytical papers and comment pieces looking at efforts to reduce health inequities in Brazil. According to the journal, Brazil has made significant improvements in maternal and child health, emergency care, and in reducing the burden of infectious diseases.
  • Member States and stakeholders to discuss social determinants of health in Brazil
    2 May, 2011 – WHO is convening a global conference on 19-21 October 2011, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to build support for the implementation of action on social determinants of health.

Background

The World Conference on Social Determinants of Health brought together Member States and stakeholders to share experiences on policies and strategies aimed at reducing health inequities. The event provided a global platform for dialogue on how the recommendations of the WHO Commission on Social Determinants of Health (2008) could be taken forward.
