Welcome from the Co-chairs of the Working Group

Dear young ambassador,

We are delighted to welcome you to the World Youth Assembly for Road Safety, as part of the First United Nations Global Road Safety Week. As you know, the theme for this Week is "Young Road Users", which means that we are not only the target group, but also active participants.

During the World Youth Assembly for Road Safety, we will be able to discuss the main problems on our roads and potential solutions. The United Nations has given us the opportunity to step forward and take responsibility. We strongly believe that this is the best time to voice our opinions and make ourselves heard! This is our chance to start making a difference. We have to seize this golden opportunity if we are hoping for improvements in road safety in the future.

We depend on each and every one of you to make this event a success. Only you can bring forward the problems, concerns, hopes and dreams of the rest of the young road users in your countries. We therefore urge you to let your mind speak freely and to participate actively in the hope of making a difference.

We cannot imagine what our next steps will be without wondering what each one of you will come up with. We cannot wait to hear about your thoughts and ideas for the implementation of our Youth Declaration for Road Safety and the follow-up on the Word Youth Assembly. Let us make our gathering at the World Youth Assembly a starting point and not an end. Let us make sure that the Youth Declaration for Road safety is a first step in a long journey towards safer transportation.

We look forward to getting to know you already before April 2007. Please come forward with any questions, comments, or suggestions. We will be more than happy to hear from you.

We hope this event will be fruitful and an important step to further road safety, not only for us, but for generations to come.

Finally, most road crashes are preventable and predictable. They do not have to happen; together we have to make an effort to make them a thing of the past. Road safety is no accident! If we want, we can make it happen!

Hope to see you all safe in the beautiful city of Geneva.

With our best regards,

Nellie & Floor
