16 June 2011 - More than 50% of newborn deaths and stillbirths related to syphilis could be prevented with simple, low cost interventions to increase coverage of screening and treatment of syphilis during pregnancy. The disease is responsible for nearly 500 000 perinatal deaths every year in sub-Saharan Africa alone. WHO has been advocating and supporting countries to eliminate congenital syphilis.
