Maternal health programme evaluation
In 2006-2007 staff from the Depatment of Reproductive Health and Research (RHR) led an external evaluation of a 10-year rural health project conducted in 97 poor rural counties in China, supported by the World Bank and the UK Department for International Development (DFID). The findings show that the project undoubtedly contributed to and, in some areas, greatly accelerated and sustained changes in system performance and maternal health outcomes through combined effects of: improvements in financial subsidies for the poor, community outreach, health infrastructure improvements, technical skills, assistance with transportation for emergency referrals and other reforms.

This policy briefing paper summarises lessons from a 10-year project that piloted strategies for addressing these problems in 97 poor counties, home to 46.78 million people.
