    Sexually Transmitted Diseases Diagnostics Initiative (SDI). The literature reviews are managed by the University of Washington (UW) Center for AIDS & STD. The purpose of this publication review is to provide health care providers in all economic settings, but especially those in resource-limited settings, with timely and concise information about new developments in STI diagnostics. This information is provided in the form of "annotated abstracts" on articles reporting original studies and reviews related to STI diagnostics.

In developing countries, STIs and their complications rank in the top five disease categories for which adults seek health care. Infection with STIs can lead to acute symptoms, chronic infection and serious delayed consequences such as infertility, ectopic pregnancy, cervical cancer and the untimely death of infants and adults.
