This study is the first to compare the direct costs, indirect costs and economic burden between the households which experienced childbirth with and without maternal death in rural areas of China, or elsewhere in the world. The study showed that the direct costs of a maternal death were significantly higher than the costs of a childbirth without a maternal death (US$4,119 vs. $370).
