In response to lessons learned from past approaches to contraceptive introduction, a Strategic Approach to contraceptive introduction has been developed, tested and refined. The approach has moved from a focus on the introduction of a single technology to one that emphasizes the need to examine the entire method mix, clients’ and community members’ needs and perspectives, and the capacity of the service delivery system to provide quality services, prior to making decisions about contraceptive introduction.

This field guide provides an overview of WHO’s Strategic Approach, as well as detailed guidance for the implementation of the first phase of the approach, namely the strategic assessment of the need for contraceptive introduction.
