First International Consultation on Hand Hygiene in Health Care
Overview
The first International Consultation on Hand Hygiene in Health Care settings took place at the World Health Organization. The Consultation examined a number of existing WHO and other international and regional strategies and guidelines in the areas of hand hygiene and infection prevention. The main objective of the Consultation was to review available evidence on hand hygiene in health care settings, and to prepare an outline of the WHO Guidelines on Hand Hygiene. Initially, closely-monitored implementation of the integrated guidelines will take place in six geographical districts, one in each WHO region, to assess impact.
The Consultation designated working groups to research specific topics in hand hygiene in the forthcoming months. Around 40 experts in the fields of hand hygiene attended the meeting.
