Launch of nine Patient Safety Solutions
Nine patient safety solutions to reduce the toll of health care-related harm affecting millions of patients daily, worldwide, were launched on 2 May 2007, by the World Health Organization (WHO) at the Washington Press Club, Washington DC. The solutions, developed by the WHO Collaborating Centre on Patient Safety (Solutions), are being made available to WHO Member States.
In developed countries it is estimated that one in 10 patients admitted to hospitals are harmed while receiving care. In the developing world the figure is likely to be much higher. The most important knowledge in the field of patient safety is how to prevent harm from happening to patients during treatment and care. The nine solutions are based on interventions and actions that have addressed patient safety problems in some countries. They are now being made available in an accessible form for use and adaptation by WHO Member States to re-design patient care processes and to make them safer.
