WHO Evidence-informed Guidelines in Nutrition for Health and Development

As part of implementing the outcomes and recommendations of the WHO Nutrition Programme Review undertaken in 2008, the Department of Nutrition for Health and Development (NHD) is strengthening its role in providing evidence-informed policy and programme guidance to Member States, in partnership with the Department of Research, Policy and Cooperation (RPC) and guided by the new WHO Guidelines Development process.

To implement this, NHD is established the WHO Nutrition Guidance Expert Advisory Group (NUGAG) guided by the WHO Steering Committee for Nutrition Guidelines Development including representatives from all Departments in WHO with an interest in the provision of recommendations in nutrition. The membership of NUGAG includes:

  • Experts from various WHO Expert Advisory Panels
  • Experts from a larger roster including thorough open calls for experts

NUGAG will meet twice a year to implement biannual programme of work in the area of evidence-informed nutrition guidelines in nutrition. The first meeting of NUGAG was held on 22-25 February 2010, the second was held in 15-18 November 2010 and the third is planned for 14-18 March 2011. NUGAG consists of 4 subgroups at present. These include: 1) micronutrients, 2) diet and health, and 3) nutrition in life course and undernutrition and 4) monitoring and evaluation. The third subgroup conducted its first meeting on 2-4 June 2010 and the fourth subgroup on 15-17 September 2010.

Currently NHD, jointly with RPC, is in the process of implementing the development and update of the following nutrition guidelines in the 2010-2011 biennium (click on each title to see the topics and priority questions related to that subgroup).
