Salt reduction and iodine fortification strategies

Scope and Purpose

Background

As part of the implementation of Objective 3 of the World Health Organization (WHO) 2008-2013 Action Plan for the Global strategy for the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases, the Global strategy on diet, physical activity and health and the Political declaration of the high-level meeting of the General Assembly on the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases, the WHO Departments for Chronic Diseases and Health Promotion and Nutrition for Health and Development, are convening a series of information exchange forums on the reduction of sodium intake at the population level and iodine fortification strategies.

The main aim of these information exchange forums is to facilitate the discussions on these topics with the private sector and nongovernmental organizations on their role in population-based prevention strategies for sodium reduction and on iodine fortification, particularly salt iodization.

The first information exchange forum held in London, United Kingdom in June 2010 focused on creating an enabling environment for population-based salt reduction strategies. The second forum held in Calgary, Canada in October 2010.focused on strategies to monitor and evaluate population sodium consumption and sources of sodium in the diet.

The Department of Prevention of Noncommunicable Diseases and the Department of Nutrition for Health and Development, at the World Health Organization in collaboration with The George Institute of Public Health and the International Council for the Control of Iodine Deficiency Disorders Global Network, are convening this exchange forum aims to discuss the role of private sector and nongovernmental organizations on supporting sodium/salt reduction and iodine fortification strategies coherently.

General objective of the forum

This third Information Exchange Forum aims to discuss the role of private sector and nongovernmental organizations on supporting sodium/salt reduction and iodine fortification strategies coherently.

Specific objectives

The Forum will specifically aim at exchanging information with all participants regarding:

  • WHO activities related sodium/salt reduction and iodine fortification strategies, particularly salt iodization.
  • the role and contributions of industry in sodium/salt reduction and iodine fortification strategies; and
  • the role and contribution of nongovernmental organizations in sodium/salt reduction and iodine fortification strategies.

Expected outcome

Identify, through exchange of information, the role that the private sector and nongovernmental organizations can play in sodium/salt reduction and iodine fortification strategies.
