Childhood stunting: challenges and opportunities
Promoting healthy growth and preventing childhood stunting
Monday, 14 October 2013
13:00 - 18:30 (Geneva time), Salle D
The WHO Department of Nutrition for Health and Development will host a Promoting Healthy Growth and Preventing Childhood Stunting colloquium “Childhood stunting: challenges and opportunities” to take place on 14th October 2013, between 13h00 and 18h30 (Geneva time). The event will be held in Salle D at the WHO Headquarters (Main Building) and is open to internal WHO and external participants. Those who cannot join in person can follow the proceedings on-line.
The discussions will focus on operational issues around setting and implementing national stunting reduction agendas with the long term goal of achieving the World Health Assembly stunting reduction target. Country examples will be presented to highlight opportunities and challenges together with strategies to formulate adequate policies and implement them. Some countries have successfully translated high level political commitment to reduce malnutrition into sub-national and multisector-driven actions. The colloquium will seek to draw lessons on how barriers and bottlenecks can be overcome to achieve progress and results.
The speakers represent perspectives from government, donors, implementing partners, international agencies and civil society. A concluding round table session will address the all-important question of how countries could go about setting and implementing stunting reduction agendas.
