Special Session of the UN Ad Hoc Interagency Task Force on Tobacco Control
Date: 27-28 February 2012
Place: Geneva, Switzerland
WHO hosted a special meeting of the UN Ad Hoc Interagency Task Force on Tobacco Control from 27-28 February 2012 in Geneva.
The principal objective of the meeting was to further strengthen the multisectoral and interagency response to the needs related to the global implementation of the WHO FCTC. The meeting reviewed achievements and challenges, and focused particularly on the contributions of the members of the Task Force to specific provisions of the Framework Convention.
The meeting highlighted areas where the need for an interagency response has been clearly established, such as taxation of tobacco products and smoke-free public places, or where the need for collaboration is rapidly emerging, such as illicit trade of tobacco products, alternatives to tobacco growing and trade-related aspects of tobacco control. Particular emphasis was also placed on overarching aspects of the interagency response such as supporting national coordinating mechanism and integrating implementation of the WHO FCTC into the United Nations Development Assistance Framework at the country level and as part of the One United Nations strategy.
