Work on access to essential medicines as part of the fulfillment of the right to health is part of the WHO Medicines Strategy 2004-2007. This research was initiated about three years ago, focusing on the following question: Over 150 countries have signed/ratified the International Covenant on Social, Economic and Cultural Rights, which includes a specific State obligation to work towards equitable access to essential medicines. But what does this mean in practice?
