WHO statement on comments cited in Folha de S. Paulo

18 July 2005

Comments attributed to a World Health Organization (WHO) staff member in the Brazilian newspaper Folha de S. Paulo on 12 July 2005, do not represent the views of the World Health Organization. The attributed comments pertained to an agreement between an antiretroviral medicines manufacturer and the Government of Brazil.

The World Health Organization believes that people must access affordable, safe and effective medicines for HIV/AIDS, and other treatable conditions. To this end, and in accordance with World Health Assembly resolutions, WHO supports countries in using the TRIPS flexibilities as outlined in global agreements. WHO also believes that the best solutions for access to medicines will be negotiated agreements that work for everyone and include all parties. In these matters, WHO's role is to offer overall technical advice when this is requested.
