Dr Margaret Chan today took office as Director-General of the World Health Organization, following her appointment in November by the World Health Assembly.

Dr Chan was welcomed by WHO staff on her arrival at WHO headquarters in Geneva.

Dr Chan met with senior staff at headquarters.

Dr Chan took over from Dr Anders Nordström who became Acting Director-General following the sudden death of former Director-General Dr LEE Jong-wook in May 2006.

Dr Chan addressed WHO staff at headquarters and in Regional Offices. She expressed her appreciation of WHO staff for their technical excellence and efficiency.

Dr Chan also praised Dr Nordström's leadership of WHO since Dr LEE Jong-wook's death.

Dr Chan's address was also broadcast to staff working in WHO Regional Offices.
