World Health Day 2005: Make every mother and child count

Date: 7 April 2005

The objective of World Health Day, celebrated annually since 1950, is to raise global awareness of a specific health theme to highlight a priority area of concern for the WHO. The theme of this year's World Health Day is healthy mothers and children, reflecting the need to change today's reality where half a million women die during pregnancy and childbirth each year and where nearly 11 million children die before celebrating their fifth birthday.

For the first time this year, the World Health Report 2005, which also deals with maternal and child health, will be launched on World Health Day.
