International Women’s Day - 8 March
WHO joins UN Agencies in a call to action against violence against women during the 57th Commission on Social Status of Women in New York, United States. Violence against women is a major violation of women’s human rights and a public health problem affecting millions of women and girls. Women and children experience short and long-term physical, mental, sexual and reproductive health consequences of such violence. Child marriage can lead to increased risk of violence against girls and negative health outcomes. Deaths due to complications in pregnancy and childbirth are the leading cause of death in young women aged 15–19.
