Parliamentarians take action for maternal and newborn health and survival: report on WHO/IPU meeting, Kampala, Uganda, 23-25 November 2009
In 2007, WHO launched a series of international discussions in response to interest expressed by parliaments to enhance governmental capacity to advance the health of mothers and babies. The third annual event under the Parliamentarians Take Action for Maternal and Newborn Health and Survival series took place in Kampala, Uganda from 23 to 25 November 2009.
Parliamentary representatives from 32 countries came together to review the role of lawmakers in efforts to meet the health-care needs of pregnant women, mothers and babies in their home countries. The participants also discussed ways to secure the necessary funds for effective maternal and newborn health interventions and shared the experience made with different models in different countries.
