Malaria

Insecticide-treated materials

Antimalarial drug resistance hinders malaria control and is therefore a major public health problem

In community-wide trials in several African settings, insecticide treated mosquito nets (ITNs) have been shown to reduce all-cause mortality by about 20%. Their use has repeatedly been shown to reduce severe disease and mortality due to malaria in endemic regions.

Insecticide-treated materials include ITNs and other materials. ITNs are a form of effective vector control, when coverage rates are high and a large proportion of human-biting by local vectors takes place after people have gone to sleep. It can also be used for personal protection. Their use has repeatedly been shown to reduce severe disease and mortality due to malaria in endemic regions.

Please note: All documents contain valuable technical information on the subject matter of impregnated mosquito nets. GMP now recommends universal coverage with Long Lasting Insecticidal Mosquito Nets. Wherever any of the earlier documents refers to targeted coverage of risk groups only, please refer to superseding guidance on this matter now provided in the 2007 GMP position statement Insecticide-treated mosquito nets: a position statement (see above).
