World - Hepatitis A prevention

Recent issue of Eurosurveillance highlights the fact that emergence of outbreaks in the European Union (EU) generally follows the introduction of the hepatitis A virus (HAV) from endemic countries through “seeding events” and that non-immunised travellers to endemic areas are often at the origin of these events, as shown in in the three articles from France, Belgium and Germany which describe clusters of travel-related cases following visits to Middle East (http://www.eurosurveillance.org/ViewArticle.aspx?ArticleId=19101). These clusters highlight the importance of effective travel medicine advice reaching travellers of all age groups and travel and health experts are reminded that to be protected and prevent the introduction of HAV in their country of origin, travellers to endemic countries need to be vaccinated against Hepatitis A.
