Immunization, Vaccines and Biologicals

WHO/V&B/02.25

Proceedings of the third Global Vaccine Research Forum, Geneva, 9-11 June 2002

The joint WHO/GAVI meeting for 2002 highlighted the hub of Vaccine Research at WHO – the Initiative for Vaccine Research (IVR/WHO) with it's new Director, Dr Kieny and her strategy for the vaccine R&D community at WHO. The conference covered many of the high priority diseases, such as AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, the success of the First African AIDS Vaccine Forum and some highly topical issues such as immunization against biological agents which can be used deliberately to cause harm and their public health implications. Developing country issues were high on the agenda in relation to clinical trials and introduction of new vaccines, as were the GAVI vaccine R&D projects for meningococcal, rotavirus, pneumococcal and new technologies.
