Securing global health: Fourth IHR implementation course

The fourth offering of the IHR implementation course (third IHR i-course) will take place from 4 March to 28 July 2013.
The objectives of this course are to strengthen core competences of key professionals (and therefore related institutions) engaged in IHR implementation at countries level; and to increase the critical mass of key professionals (and therefore related institutions) that share the same understanding of the IHR framework and can be used as resources for dissemination and implementation in their country, but also at sub-regional or regional level.
This on-the-job training (in English) targets public health professionals, mainly belonging to National IHR Focal Points (NFP), but also professionals from other related sectors from national or international organizations, in the public and private sectors. Each cohort of participants will also include WHO staff from country offices and regional offices.
From their workstations, course participants will be able to:
- Inform relevant stakeholders on the scope of the revised IHR
- Communicate with WHO as set out in the IHR
- Collect, analyze and disseminate critical public health information
- Lead or interact with staff responsible for carrying out risk assessment
- Lead or interact with sectors/staff engaged in the strengthening/acquisition of core public health capacities
- Trigger appropriate legislative, regulatory, and organizational reforms
- Plan, coordinate, monitor and assess IHR implementation
- Contribute to effective management of emergency situations
- Assess national vulnerability in health systems for effective IHR implementation
- Assess all actions in light of other areas of international law
- Train relevant professionals in IHR implementation
The IHR i-course – What’s in it for participants?
- This course will help participants implement the IHR in the course of their daily work
- They will become part of a network of IHR professionals that share practical experience and solutions in the face of today’s public health challenges
- They will be better prepared to effectively manage a public health emergency in their country/region
What’s in it for the participant’s institution?
With specialized training in IHR implementation the participant will be able to:
- Train other professionals in their institution as well as counterparts at country level
- Strengthen their institution’s capacity to coordinate the response to a public health emergency

- On-the-job distance training: 4 March to 26 May 2013
- Two week face-to-face session: 1 to 12 July 2013
- Two week on-the-job distance training: 13 to 28 July 2012
