Consultation Meeting
Reports
In response to World Health Assembly resolution WHA55.23, the WHO Noncommunicable Diseases
and Mental Health Cluster (NMH) has embarked on a consultation process with stakeholders
to develop input to the Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity and Health. This
process included meetings with Member States, with UN agencies and other intergovernmental
organizations, with civil society and with the private sector. This consultation process
will provide the content basis for the Strategy, which is currently being drafted.

Consultation
Document to Guide the Development of a WHO Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity
and Health
In late January 2003, the World Health
Organization sent Member States the Consultation Document to Guide the
Development of a WHO Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity and Health.
This is a draft framework for the elaboration of the Global Strategy, and includes some
key discussion points, which policymakers may wish to consider in preparing their input
into the strategy as WHO prepares for Regional Consultations with Member States as part of
its broad-ranging and ongoing consultative process. Member States were encouraged to use
all opportunities to communicate their views to enable WHO to develop a strategy that
fully reflects their needs and priorities. This Consultation Document is made available
here for the information of various other stakeholders involved in diet and physical
activity as it impacts global public health.

To expand the range of input from Civil
Society to the Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity and Health, WHO sponsored an
Internet-based online discussion, which allowed stakeholders to exchange
their views, knowledge and experiences. This was moderated on WHO's behalf by
Stakeholder Forum. Targeted invitations were sent to more than 500 relevant civil society
institutions around the world and over 160 people from 45 countries actively participated
in the four-week discussion.
