2013 WHO HIV Guidelines / Strategic use of antiretrovirals
In 2011, a large multi-country study by the HIV Prevention Trials Network showed that antiretrovirals (ARVs) cut HIV transmission by 96% within couples where one partner is infected with HIV and the other is not. Following these findings, political momentum and country efforts are now building up to realize this potential to end the HIV epidemic through greater and more strategic use ARVs for both prevention and treatment of HIV.
WHO’s key objective is to assess the new evidence and country experiences, and to translate them into global guidelines that can inform country decisions. We are planning to release revised guidelines consolidating clinical, operational and programmatic recommendations for use of ARVs for HIV prevention and treatment in July 2013.
