HIV/ AIDS has become a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in women and children in high burden countries in the region. In most of these countries, prevention of transmission from HIV infected mother to baby is a priority. The international community has recognized the magnitude of the problem and several Global and Regional initiatives have been launched to reinforce countries’ efforts to scale up prevention of mother to child transmission and paediatric care programmes. WHO and UNICEF are playing a leading role in supporting countries to scale up.
