In collaboration with UNFPA, UNAIDS, and sex-worker associations, particularly the network of sex worker projects, WHO is developing Guidance for the prevention and treatment of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections for sex workers and their clients in low- and middle- income countries. Evidence and experience from over a dozen countries support the recommendation of a package of basicinterventions and services for sex workers including enhanced access to condoms, testing and counseling, STI and HIV treatment, STI screening, offer of presumptive treatment of STIs and access to comprehensive health and social services. The first meeting of the Guidelines Development Group, which steers the process and includes civil society, researchers, scientists, programme managers and UN technical staff will be held in Geneva from 23 to 25 August 2010. A consultation process with civil society will follow. The new guide will be released in early 2011.
