Neonatal mortality
Neonatal mortality levels play an increasingly important role in child mortality. The proportion of child deaths which occur in the neonatal period has increased in all WHO regions over the last 20 years. WHO is leading the production of the neonatal mortality estimates within the United Nations Inter-agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation (UN IGME). UN IGME - which also includes members from UNICEF, the World Bank and United Nations Population Division - was established in 2004 to advance the work on monitoring progress towards the achievement of MDG4.
