Mortality data

These web pages provide information on levels of mortality and causes of death.

LEVELS OF MORTALITY AND CHILD MORTALITY BY CAUSE

  • Life Tables for WHO Member States
To assess the overall levels of health achievement, it is crucial to develop the best possible assessment of the life table for each country.
  • Child mortality
Under-5 mortality rate is a leading indicator of the level of child health and overall development in countries. It is also a MDG indicator.
  • Neonatal mortality
Mortality during the neonatal period accounts for a large proportion of under-5 deaths; the proportion of neonatal deaths is expected to increase as countries continue to witness a decline in under-5 mortality rate.
  • Child mortality, by cause
Reducing child mortality continues to be a global priority and achievement of the MDG of child mortality is possible only if the major causes of deaths are addressed by maternal, newborn and child health interventions.
  • Maternal mortality
MDG 5 Target 5A calls for the reduction of maternal mortality ratio by three quarters between 1990 and 2015.
  • Estimates of child and adult mortality and life expectancy at birth, by country
Derived from the life tables and published in the annual editions of the World Health Report since 2000.
