WHO eHealth Resolution
A resolution on eHealth adopted at the 58th World Health Assembly
The eHealth resolution which includes the Health Academy was endorsed by the World Health Assembly, the supreme decision-making body of the World Health Organization (WHO), which met in Geneva from 16 to 25 May 2005. Representatives from many of the Member States took the floor in support of the resolution. They endorsed the Health Academy and requested its extension to their countries.
Noting the potential impact of advances in information and communication technologies, the World Health Assembly adopted a resolution establishing an eHealth Strategy for WHO. For this purpose it defined eHealth as the cost-effective and secure use of information and communication technologies in support of health and health-related fields, including health-care services, health surveillance, health literature, and health education.
According to the resolution, the Director-General of WHO is requested, among other things, to promote international, multisectoral collaboration, to provide technical support to Member States, to facilitate the integration of eHealth in health systems, and to continue the expansion of mechanisms such as the Health Academy, which promote health awareness and healthy lifestyles through eLearning.
