| The publication
of the World Health Report 2000 generated considerable interest, discussion and debate. Because of this interest, at the
107th meeting of the Executive Board in January 2001, the Director-General committed WHO
to regularly undertaking and publishing the results of assessments of the performance of
health systems in its Member States. She also committed the Organization to an extensive
consultation process on the methods. This would involve regional and technical
consultations followed by the establishment of a scientific peer review group to assess
the scientific validity of the methods proposed by the secretariat following the
consultation process. Regional consultations have been held in each of the six WHO
regions, country-specific seminars or workshops have been held in a number of requesting
countries, and there have been eight topic-specific technical consultations. A small
Advisory Group established to advise the Director-General on the process of performance
assessment as a whole has met twice, and the scientific peer review group has met once. |
