Global Health Cluster Newsletter 2 - 2010

The aim of the Newsletter is to share information on the latest issues of concern to the Global Health Cluster.

The Global Health Cluster (GHC) meeting, 10-11 June 2010 in Geneva, Switzerland

The Global Health Cluster (GHC) meeting, hosted by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), was held 10-11 June 2010 in Geneva, Switzerland. The meeting brought together 70 participants and observers representing 20 out of 39 partner agencies in order to take stock of progress made and discuss the way forward for the Global Health Cluster in 2010-2011.

Health Cluster Coordinator Lessons Learned Workshop

The first Health Coordinator Lessons Learned Workshop, an initiative of the Global Health Cluster, was held 7-8 June 2010 in Geneva. Twenty-six past and present Health Cluster Coordinators participated from all six WHO Regions and NGO GHC partner Organizations. The workshop focused on health cluster lessons learned and good practices, constraints, bottlenecks, with recommendations as to how to embed the former and overcome the latter.

IASC Inter-cluster Coordination Mission to Colombia, 21 to 30 June 2010 At the request of the Humanitarian Coordinator and the HCT, the IASC Inter-cluster Coordination Mission was fielded on 21 June 2010 to 30 June 2010.

Effective NGO Participation in Humanitarian Reform Mechanisms: Maintaining Good Practice for Cluster Partners

The Effective NGO Participation in Humanitarian Reform Mechanisms: Maintaining Good Practice for Cluster Partners Merlin - ECHO funded project 2009/2010 aims to address weaknesses in NGO awareness of, and participation in, the cluster approach, particularly the Health Cluster. These weaknesses have been identified through: real time evaluations; cluster self-assessments and country-specific agency reports; Phase 1 of the external evaluation of the cluster approach; Joint Country Missions; inter-agency studies of the cluster response in recent crises; informal studies undertaken by Global Health Cluster partners.

IASC gender e-learning course now available online

The IASC Sub-Working Group on Gender and Humanitarian Action has developed an e-training on core issues on gender and how it relates to aspects of humanitarian response, including the Cluster approach. The training provides the basic steps a humanitarian worker must take to ensure gender equality in humanitarian programming during an emergency.

The Inter-agency Field Manual on Reproductive Health in Humanitarian Settings

The Inter-Agency Field Manual was revised this year to extend principles and technical content beyond refugee situations to use in diverse crises, including conflict and natural disasters and to be in line with other inter-agency documents.

New guidelines/reports - The IASC Guidelines for addressing HIV/AIDS in Humanitarian Settings

The Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) is issuing Guidelines for HIV/AIDS interventions in Emergency Settings to help individuals and organizations in their efforts to address the special needs of HIV-infected and HIV-affected people living in emergency situations. The Guidelines are based on the experiences of organizations of the UN system and their NGO partners, and reflect the shared vision that success can be achieved when resources are pooled and when all concerned work together.

United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Humanitarian Affairs Segment 13-15 July 2010

The ECOSOC. The Humanitarian Affairs Segment of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) took place in New York from 13-15 July, 2010. The theme of this year's Humanitarian Segment was "Strengthening of the coordination of humanitarian assistance: present challenges and their impact on the future”.

Meetings: The Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC), 7-9 July 2010, Geneva, Switzerland

The 77th IASC WG meeting took place in Geneva from 7-9 July 2010. The IFRC hosted the meeting which discussed emergency preparedness and cluster issues, protection and IASC related issues.
